Interview with Lissa from Roots, Wings and Travel Things

Today we have a very talented travel blogger with us. She’s Lissa from the blog Roots, Wings and Travel Things.

I remember the first time I read an article by Lissa. What impressed me most was her wonderful way of narrating things. I hope that after reading this interview, you’re encouraged to visit her blog!

Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging because it was time for me to focus on doing something I love! I’ve always loved writing. I love telling stories. For nine years now, I’ve focused solely on being a mother and while I love that job more than anything in the world, it’s easy to lose a bit of yourself after so long. Starting our blog was a way for me to carve out time in my life to focus on something else that I love. It forces me to take a bit of “me” time which isn’t something I’ve had much of in the last nine years. It’s been a great way to find myself again!

I chose to start a travel blog specifically because our family loves to travel. Because I homeschool our boys and we live on one income, we’ve had to be incredibly creative in how we’ve been able to afford travel. I have won a number trips through photo and essay contests, so starting a travel blog seemed like the next step to take. Our hope is that someday our blog will help us afford to travel a bit more!

What are your favourite blogging tools of the trade?

My favorite blogging tool is Twitter because of the great blogging community there. I enjoy using other social media as well, but Twitter is the one place where there is such a strong sense of community. It’s easy to connect with and stay in touch with other bloggers. The conversational and community aspects of Twitter are so supportive. It makes blogging so much fun because I love really connecting with other like-minded people!

What bloggers inspire you the most and why?

I have so many! My favorite family travel blog is Wandering Wagars. But I also love Joan Senio at My Best Friend Adeline. Her blog is just so positive and she is such an encouraging, supportive, and inspirational voice in the blogging community!

How much time do you devote to blogging?

It really depends on the day. I like to wake up early before our boys get up and use that time to work on the blog. I usually get up around 6:30 am and they often don’t wake up until 8:00 or 8:30 so I sit down with my coffee and get a good hour and a half to two hours to blog. I usually use this time to write my posts because it’s hard to get into a good writing place when they are up and running around!

During the day I pop on and off social media as time allows. That can be done in short little bursts so it’s no big deal when I get pulled away because our boys need something.

On the weekends my husband will do something with the boys for a while so I can have some extra time to devote to social media. My husband is the one who pushed me to start our blog and he’s been nothing but supportive when it comes to making sure I have enough time to put into it!

What are your hobbies?

Writing. Writing has always been my favorite hobby, which is why I decided to start blogging! I also love reading. I usually have a couple of books going at once! I just finished three and still have two going!

We enjoy cooking and baking together as a family. We sit down to eat dinner together every single night. I don’t mind cooking dinner alone, but I love when we all cook together!

What’s your dream job?

My dream job would be to be a professional student! I love learning for the sake of learning so much that I wish someone would pay me to just keep going to college and getting more degrees! I’d never do anything with them because I’d always be in school. I just love learning things!

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Wow — this is hard. I generally don’t think about changing myself often even though there are some things I don’t particularly love about myself. I’ve been through some hard things but I’m grateful for all of those things because they’ve made me who I am today. Changing something might change who I am now and that scares me!

If I had to give one specific answer I would say that I wish I didn’t have the rare diseases I have. My health has been a long, difficult journey and there are definitely parts I wish I could change or erase. But again, I’d be afraid of what impact that would have on the person I’ve become! I’ve learned so much from those struggles and I wonder if I would know everything I know if I erased that part of my life.

What’s your favourite story?

Another really hard one! I love a good story and there are so many! I mostly read non-fiction but my favorite novelist is Nicholas Sparks. My favorite book of his is A Walk to Remember.

But I won’t watch the movie. I remember when they first started making his books into movies. A Walk to Remember was his second book to be turned into a film. I was SO excited to see it. My boyfriend (now husband) came up to visit me at school the weekend it opened so he could take me to see it. But the film was so awful that we walked out. I’ve never walked out of a film before and I haven’t done it again since!

I’m not a very religious person but A Walk to Remember is a very religious story. In the film, they took out all of the religious parts- which changed the entire story. I was so upset! You can’t just change a story like that! I’ll always prefer the book!

What’s your main goal in life?

My main goal in my life is to raise my sons to be happy people. Our sons have taught me to define success very differently than I had defined it before I became a mother. To me — now — success means happiness. I just want my children to be able to find their way through life in a way that makes them genuinely happy. This means that right now we’re focusing on teaching them that happiness lies in moments. In relationships. In feelings. In experiences. Not in money or possessions. If I can teach them these things so that they truly understand them by the time they are ready to go off on their own in this big world, I will have succeeded in my number one goal in life!

What would you say to a blogger who’s just starting out?

I would tell a new blogger to write about what they love. Don’t start a blog unless you’re writing about something you truly love. Loving your work means two things. One is that it will be fun! Blogging should be fun! Otherwise, it can easily feel like too much work and you’ll burn out. Second, writing about what you love means that your passion will shine through your work and others will enjoy it. So don’t write what you think others will enjoy. Write about what you enjoy and allow that to shine through. It takes time to build up a following. Enjoying the process and allowing your passion to shine through will attract the right people and you’ll find your tribe!
